Inside The Dugout: A Catcher's Go-To Gear

With our youngest behind the plate, this post shares the catcher gear and dugout items we’ve found to be the most useful through practices, games, and long tournament days.

Catching is a whole different world, and it seems to change with every level. This post pulls together the things our catcher actually uses and relies on, from the basics you need early on to the extras that start to matter as the game speeds up. It’s not about having everything at once, just having the right pieces at the right time so your catcher can focus on doing their job behind the plate.

  1. Her Favorite Easton Catcher's Gear

  2. Wheeled Bag

  3. Under Armour Back Pack (our girl carries 2 bags, all catching things and extra bats go in the big rolling bag (#2!) and her game helmet, batting gloves, and infield glove goes in the backpack)

  4. Catcher's Mitt (for a catcher just getting started get a mitt that feels pretty broke in, it's hard enough to get used to the gear the glove shouldn't hold you back, we also like to suggest a web that you can see through, it will help your catcher connect the feel on their hand with the catch in their brain)

  5. Molded Cleats

  6. Turf Shoes

  7. Thumb Guard (when they start catching faster pitching, this can make all the difference, once they jam their thumb backwards its very easy to do again and it effects the ability to catch low or moving pitches.)

  8. Sunglasses

Bonus Items...

Because we have a history of catching in our family, it appears sometimes that we have some crazy stuff in our catcher's bag, but I can promise you it all comes in handy!

  • 100 Ft Tape Measure

    • Working on throw downs? You need a little over 84 ft (for 60ft bases), pitchers need to know exactly where to throw from, and sometimes fields just don't look right and having a tape measure in your bag can save the day... This one has a clip so if you find yourself reaching for it often it can go on the outside of your bag!

  • Throw Down Plate

    • Whether your catcher is working on blocks or catching a bullpen this throw down plate lets your pitcher know that you have your stuff together. We fold it and put it in the shoe compartment in her catching bag so its a quick grab when you need it.

As with all sports and positions you can spend more money later on when you know that they are going to be devoting their time to catching. As our girl gets older we will replace her mitt with a bigger one so she can make the transition to the next age range.
